English Language Theatre Thrives in Jerusalem

Encore!
UK travellers to Jerusalem will be happy to learn that the ancient city is now home to an array of modern theatre and musicals performed exclusively in English. The Encore Educational Theatre Company which was established in 2006 presents the classics of the musical stage as well as lesser-known and original works, in order to expose audiences to this repertoire and, in particular, encourage young people to become the theatre-going public of the future.

What's on your holiday list?

Culture and theatre are often key elements to any holiday agenda and travellers can delight in a vast array of production choices.  The Encore Company has literally brought Broadway to the Holyland with full stage productions of Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma! , The Wizard of Oz and West Side Story. The Encore group is also well known for renditions of many of Gilbert and Sullivan classics like H.M.S Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado.

Most recently, during Passover, travellers had the rare opportunity of taking a peak into the thriving subculture of Israel's English-language music and theatre at The Stage One Festival which took place at the Bet Avi Chai center in Jerusalem from April 8th-10th 2012. The Stage One Festival showcased all of the best in English-language theatrics in a three day Passover drama marathon. The Festival, which has just celebrated its third consecutive year, included seven separate plays, as well as Stand-Up and improvisational comedy routines performed exclusively in English. In addition to an array of drama and musical ensembles, they also hosted a range of musical performances from traditional folk to modern Jazz.

For those planning ahead, this summer, Jerusalem's Bet Shmuel Theatre will be host to their latest musical, My Fair Lady from May 29th to June 7th 2012 – what better highlight to include then the world renowned story of Eliza Doolittle transforming from flower girl to mover and shaker in high society in one of the best known musicals in the world.
