The center will include two halls, plus space for music and dance schools. One of France's preeminent architects, Manuelle Gautrand will be designing the 4,500-square-meter and will work together with architect Batya Swirsky Malul of Holon to design the 60-million NIS center, which will also feature a public square for outdoor performances. On the top floor there will be a lookout point with an open terrace from which one can view Ashkelon and its environs.

What's inside

The center will have two separate wings that will house a dance school and a municipal conservatory. There will be two auditoriums on the ground floor - one seating 500 people and the other 150 - thus providing the city with medium-size performance venues that complement the city's existing Heikhal Hatarbut, which seats 900.
The structure will resemble a stack of boxes with a perforated metallic-sheet covering; though the city had originally planned to erect the facility in a more central place, it decided to move it to give it more space and visibility. Construction will begin in about a year.

More Info

Ashkelon is the southernmost city on the Mediterranean shoreline. In recent years, its 12 kilometers of beautiful beaches have attracted both Israelis and foreign tourists. Ashkelon was named after an ancient city whose remains can be found on Tel Ashkelon in the Ashkelon National Park. The city is mentioned in the Bible several times. But the main stories connected to it are about Samson and the fact that Goliath the Philistine was “a man of Ashkelon". Its location on the coast has often made it an important port city.
